Well, the Fantasy Golf season is in full swing. It just two days a group of us will gather for our annual Fantasy Golf Auction. You may wonder how a Fantasy Golf Auction works? Every participant is given 100 points to choose 10 golfers. Like any auction you have an order as to who starts the bidding. They will choose which golfer they would like along with a point value for that golfer and then the bidding war starts until all participants have 10 golfers. This league will be based on total earnings for the seasons making it not very exciting to follow, but the key to winning is to pick guys that will be steady through out the year and guys that will pick up a couple wins for you.
This league is provided by Buzz Fantasy Leagues: http://buzzfantasyleagues.com/

This week is the Bob Hope Classic being held in La Quinta, CA at various courses. The host course, PGA West (Palmer Design), will serve as the final round venue on Sunday. This is a unique format as the players will play 90 holes this week in a pro am format.
My Yahoo Fantasy Golf Picks for this week:
Starting: Charley Hoffman, Bill Haas, Bubba Watson & Stewart Cink
Bench: Matt Kuchar, Pat Perez, Brendon de Jonge & Stewart Cink

In other golf news, Tiger Woods has made it official that he will start his 2011 campaign at next weeks Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, CA. Tiger has won his last five tournaments at Torrey Pines and I look for this one to be no exception.
Tiger will need to get off to a fast start this year to quiet all of his critics. And nothing will do this more than by putting a 'W' on the board to start the season.
Tiger will take a week off after Torrey Pines before heading to Dubai, United Arab Emirates for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
After Dubai don't expect to see Tiger until February 23-27 at the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship.

'Pipe Dream'
'Pipe Dream' the new reality show on Golf Channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows. If your looking for inspiration, hope or even a dream you should tune in Tuesday nights at 8:30pm to the Golf Channel.
Pipe Dream follows Mark Burk, a 53 year old scratch golf with dreams of one day playing on the Champions Tour. Mark was accused of domestic violence and thrown to the streets. Two years later he's struggling to find work, food, money and a place to live. His ultimate dream is to make it back onto the Champions Tour. But first he must find a job, get some money and find a steady place to live.
Mark has big hopes in his future. He must find his way to the Champions Tour Q school in order to take that first step at achieving his dream. But how does one do so when they have nothing?
Tune in Tuesdays at 8:30pm to the Golf Channel to see if Mark can find his way back! I know I will be...

Byrd Wins Playoff
Jonathan Byrd captures the first title of the season on the second playoff hole at Kapalua today over Robert Garrigus. Both players finished at 24 under par after 72 holes. After both players pared the first playoff hole (18th) they moved on to #1 where Bryd two putted for par. Robert Garrigus then missed a short 3 footer for par to move on to the next playoff hole giving Byrd the win.
Graeme McDowell, also known as G-Mac, finished one shot out of the playoff, at 23 under, after firing an 11 under 62, tying the course record.
Steve Stricker shot a 2 under par 71 after struggling most of the day with his putter. Sticker finished in a tie for fourth at 20 under par with Carl Pettersson.
The players will now hope on over to Honolulu for the Sony Open next week at Waialae Country Club. Waialae couldn't be anymore different than the Plantation Course at Kapalua. The players will battle a very flat and tree lines course this coming week.
Anyone coming over from Kapalua will enjoy the walk at Waialae much better!

2011 Picks Up Where 2010 Left Off
The rules of golf are probably the most difficult of rules to understand in golf. And 2011 is picking up right where 2010 left off in the case of rules infractions! Camilo Villegas was DQ'd on Thursday after he chunked a chip shot and then swept away some divot material as he watched his ball roll back down the hill to where he was standing. Villegas was deemed to have 'improved his lie' by sweeping away the divots which is a two shot penalty under the rules of golf. Villegas signed his score card after the round, unaware of the rule.
No body noticed the rules infraction at the time of the infraction, but it was noticed on TV by someone watching from home. This person 'tweeted' the infraction and it was then picked up and watched on site by PGA Tour officials where they deemed Villegas to have made the rules infraction and was then DQ'd for signing an incorrect score card.
On Saturday, Ryan Palmer almost found himself in the same situation as he did the same thing except he watched the ball roll in a different direction and ended up several feet from where the previous shot was played. They ruled that sense the ball finished several feet away from the previous spot that Palmer had not improved his lie, therefore he was not penalized.
So I ask: What are your thoughts about viewers calling in or tweeting to notify the PGA about rules infractions? Should this be allowed?

Hyundi Tournament of Champions - Round 1
Round 1 is rapping up with Jonathan Byrd and Carl Pettersson as the early co-leaders at 7 under with Ben Crane only one back at -6. A lot of guys playing very solid to start the year out. Players took advantage of a very soft course as heavy rains drenched the course earlier this morning. Watch for the course to dry out as the weekend goes along and for scores to stay steady.
The past couple years the winner has been at -22 and -24 and I would look for scores to be very similar this year. However, if the trade winds start to blow watch for scores to stay pretty steady from where they are currently at.
Local Madisonian Steve Stricker is currently at -5 with two holes to play. Look for Stricker to have another stellar performance this year. He seems to really like this course and plays well every year.
Coming off an injury plagued year Anthony Kim opens up with a -4 69 on the very long par 73 course. Nice to see Anthony playing good again. He's just another one of those 'young guns' to watch out for this year. Anthony is a player that has tons of potential but we are yet to see in full. Maybe this will be his year.
With the leader board full of Americans will we see our first American winner sense Jim Furyk in 2001?

Welcome To Fairways News & Notes
Welcome to Fairways News & Notes! Stay up to date with all the latest news and notes in the golfing world. I will talk about upcoming events, news from the industry, my golfing experiences and trip notes from our yearly golf vacation. So lets get started...
In only a couple of hours the 2011 PGA Tour Season will kick off in Hawaii at Kapalua. What will 2011 bring? Will Tiger make a comeback to remember? Will all of those who changed companies continue to perform? Which 'young gun' is going to step up this year?
2011 is the year of many headlines and there is no bigger headline than Tiger Woods. Will he return to his former glory? We all expect to see him in San Diego at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. This is a place he loves to play and a place he grew up playing. But will his new swing be ready to go? I was able to watch most of the Chevron Challenge and Tiger looked like he was really starting to get his new swing working, but the bigger question will be his putting. Can the best putter the game has ever seen continue to poor in putts when he needs too? Or will other players continue to do to Tiger what he has done to them for year?
What Graeme McDowell did at the Chevron was great for the game of golf! He stood up to Tiger Woods on the 18th green (twice) and pored in two putts to take down Woods. But will the change in equipment hinder McDowell's chances at another great season? It will be interesting to see if he can carry over his great play into 2011 with these changes and continue to produce the same great results. Year after year we see many players make the jump to other equipment manufactures and lose their games. Hopefully, we wont see the likes of McDowell, Furyk and Camillo do the same.
Best of the luck to everyone on tour this year and hopefully it will be another great year!
